The US BBB system took over the Canadian Council of Better Business Bureaus last year on August 16, 2011. In September of 2011, the Americans convened a meeting here in Canada to formally strip the Canadian BBB Council of its ability to govern Canada. December 15, 2011 would be the last day Canada governed itself and the President of the Canadian Council of Better Business Bureaus located in Toronto left his position. The Toronto BBB joined the American BBB system and asked the Americans for the Hamilton, Halton, Niagara and Brantford regions of Ontario in an effort to increase its revenue source and size.
On August 16, 2011 Businesses and Charities located within South Central Ontario began getting letters and phone calls from the four telemarketers who work for the Toronto Better Business Bureau out of its Etobicoke office stating that the Toronto BBB would now service the Hamilton Halton Niagara and Brantford regions of Ontario with regard to issuing company reports and assisting the public with scams, complaints and mediations. We want you to know that you are not getting the full story. The American BBB system has been running a deficit for the last several years. Needing to funnel money from Canada to support the American BBB’s deficit, BBBs throughout Canada were given notice that effective August 16, 2011 they could no longer use the BBB name unless they became a part of the US BBB system. Several BBBs fought this American takeover including your local BBB. Toronto became a part of the US BBB system and immediately asked for the Hamilton, Halton, Niagara and Brantford regions of Ontario to further increase its size and revenue. Your local Bureau has been in the Hamilton Halton Niagara and Brantford region for 74 years. Now, instead of supporting your local office, monies from our economy could possibly go to support Toronto and Washington.
We are determined to stay open and serve our local community as we have for the past 74 years. Effective August 17, 2011 we are now known as the CANADIAN BUSINESSES AND CHARITIES BUREAU or CBCB. We will continue to issue company reports and we will continue to monitor the marketplace, assist consumers, report scams and ensure that only reputable businesses stand out above the others in our area. We need and welcome your support to ensure that your local Business Consumer Agency remains local. Do you really trust the Toronto BBB? Our Board, staff and current CBCB Member Businesses and Charities are endeavoring to embark on another 74 years as the CANADIAN BUSINESSES AND CHARITIES BUREAU – an agency founded in Canada, created by Canadians and run locally for Canadians.
The services we provide will continue – our phone numbers remain the same, our 74-year database remains the same, our local area staff remains the same. Only our name has changed and we welcome the opportunity to continue serving our community as we have for the last seven decades.
